Private Dentistry Awards 2013. My bid.

I was once told by a marketing (non-dental) chap not to "hide my light under a bushel".

So I am declaring that I will enter the Private Dentistry Awards 2013 in the new category "Best Scheme for Treatment of Nervous Patients".  "Do you provide special or dedicated treatment for nervous or phobic patients? Are your initiatives unique and ground breaking? Tell us how you excel in delivering care to this patient group."

I first offered "RA" or Inhalation Sedation to patients when I worked as an NHS Associate in 1977, one year after qualifying. Since 1991 I have been in solely private practice and have consistently utilised RA on a daily basis (on average) and therefore on approximately 8000 occasions.

I was so impressed with the potential that I bought my own equipment and took it with me when I left
( with the principle's agreement).  I know this has had a profoundly beneficial effect on the dental health and self confidence of very many patients both adults and children. I know that because they tell me so. and write me very moving testimonials.

In 1999 I met and was coached by Chris Barrow in the Dental Business School. During the 3rd year, in a close-support group he raised the question of what it might be that we did differently from most others.

This rang a bell and after explaining my previous experience with "RA" in helping anxious dental patients it was his inspiration that moved me on to develop my teaching courses. " I dub thee- The RA Coach" and the rest as they say is history.

I have developed and run since 2003. If you know me or my courses then please support my bid.
There is a great deal of information about me and the courses on this blog and on the RA Coach website.

I began delivering the courses in 2003 from my own practice initially, then after 2 years I was invited to Ireland by a Newbury delegate, Dr.Anne O'Donnell hosting. There I ran the course on two occasions in  Wexford and on a 3rd occasion in Dublin.

More recently they have been hosted by Richard Fretwell in Northumberland and Andy Lane's practice in Saddleworth. On March 23rd 2013, Dr. Rob Endicott in Stratford on Avon will be the host.

In 2011 I undertook and passed a basic teaching award ( PTTLS C&G level 4) to underpin my courses.

I believe this track record in developing and delivering teaching, based in private practice , on this topic, to small groups (normally 8-15) is unique.

I also believe that running these vCPD days quarterly for almost 10 years, on this niche topic is also unique. I have taught GDPs, specialists, other dental sedationists, DCPs and DNs too- all of this to pass on my 35 years of experience of the benefits of the technique to a far wider number of dentally anxious and sometimes phobic patients, than I could ever help myself.

If you are not sure - here is just a little of the supporting evidence.

I would like to pay tribute also to my wife Chris, a Manchester Dental Hospital trained RDN with the Certificate in Sedation Dental Nursing. Without her it would have been impossible to run the courses. Hard work and dedication really only scratch the surface of her contribution.

If you have attended a course or indeed are a patient or just approve of the work I have done and my journey, I'd love your support when the time comes. Thanks.
